Write an Effective Personal Statements

The personal statement or narrative response is a critical factor in determining your advancement in scholarship and fellowship competitions.  For those application processes that feature an interview, your written work must convince the selection committee that you are interesting, engaging, serious in your pursuits, and worthy of an interview.  A compelling personal statement enables you to stand out in the field of other outstanding applicants, each of whom will have an impressive gpa and list of achievements.

Steps to be followed

  1. Have a consistent story line that focuses on your special aspects, accomplishments, interests, and experiences.  Do NOT present a “resume in prose” but an essay with an introduction, thesis, supporting material, and conclusion.  You must engage the reader quickly with intriguing or compelling opening and closing sentences in each paragraph.
  2. Maintain a sharp focus.  You cannot share EVERY interest or accomplishment, so don’t try.  See above.  (It is more compelling to describe one or two things in detail and with consideration than to gloss over many of your interests and accomplishments.)
  3. Make it interesting.  Which of your experiences, ideas, accomplishments, etc. are exciting, unique, compelling?  Which will engage the reader?  Use these as part of your personal statement.  But remember, you can take a somewhat mundane job, service, or situation and make it interesting by the way you present it.  You don’t have to bungee jump in your spare time to be an interesting candidate!
  4. Be yourself.  In a “blind” reading of your application with other applications, your teachers and family should be able to identify yours.  Your responses should be those that only YOU can write.  Therefore, reflect upon an experience that was uniquely yours.  Remember, your experience doesn’t have to be universally profound, but it should have greatly affected you.
  5. Avoid generalizations (those things that most applicants could say about themselves, e.g. “I enjoy challenges,” “I want to get the most out of life,” “I want to serve my community”) and clichés.
  6. Avoid undue repetition.  Every word counts and should serve its purpose in advancing your personal statement.
  7. Show your knowledge of your planned course/place of study, your future career, the aims of the scholarship, relevant current events, etc. with specific references.
  8. Have perfect spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
  9. Edit, edit, edit.  Rewrite, rewrite, rewrite. . . .
  10. Get someone to review your statement.  At least one of your major professors should read over your statement for content and clarity.

Preparation for writing an urgent paper

Make sure you understand the essay question(s). When you are under the time pressure, it is likely easy to skim over the question to get to writing faster. Don’t do this – it is all too easy to miss some crucial details and realize it only when you reread the question after the essay is finished.

Find reliable information sources in advance. If you already know which books you are going to use, it’s excellent.

Prepare your thesis statement. A thesis statement is a short (no more than a couple of sentences at most) expression of the main gist of your argument.

Writing an urgent paper

  • Speed things up by typing your notes in the same document you use for writing an essay. For example, plan out what exactly you are going to write in each paragraph: write a single sentence describing the main point it covers and a couple of lines that support the evidence for each paragraph.
  • Arrange an outline that is basically the gist of your essay without all the usual filler, padding, and quotations. Your job now is to provide exactly this. Spread out your arguments, add citations from your sources, make sure paragraphs flow into one another logically, fill in the blanks, and you will see how the essay grows around the frame.
  • Don’t bother with introduction and conclusion until you’ve written everything else. The introduction comes first for the reader but not for you. It should be written from the perspective of someone who already knows everything there.
  • Concentrate on one task at a time. Right now, it is writing. Don’t get distracted by correcting typos or mistakes until you’ve finished typing the whole essay unless you get really bothered by red underline in Microsoft Word.
  • Don’t plagiarize. As you write, you may be tempted to simply copy and paste a sentence or two here and there to speed up the process.

Brainstorm. Brainstorming stretches your imagination and thinking capacity. Brainstorm in a relaxed but not too relaxed position. You can decide to take a walk as you think about the topic. Remember to brainstorm with a pen and pad to make notes. Ask yourselves questions about the topic. These questions may include:

  •   What meaning does the topic have for you?
  •   What is the purpose of writing on such a topic?
  •   Has this topic been written by others? How did they go about it?
  •   What unique angle/perspective do you intend to use?
  •   What are your resources and research materials?

Concentrate. Start by creating a schedule for your paper. Copy the schedule above and paste it somewhere you can see it. For example, on your mirror or on the wall close to your table. Stick to the time allocated to each process and focus on turning off all forms of distraction when you work.

Outline. An outline is a framework that helps give your paper a definition. An effective outline acts as a landmark that gives your work direction. It also helps you know when you derail and need to get back in line.

#2 Writing Tips

Title. Your titles should be relevant to the essay. Titles are usually short summaries of the thesis statement.

Introduction. Make your introduction on the subject matter in question. Your introduction should contain your thesis statement.

Body. It is made up of series of supporting paragraphs. Depending on the font size and line spacing, a five page paper is likely to have about 5-8 supporting paragraphs.  Make paragraphs for each point and make sure you put the best points forward.

Conclusion. Conclude by restating your thesis statement. If there are results of findings, summarise them. You can also conclude by giving a call to action to your readers. You can do so by suggesting materials for further reading.

#3 Post Writing Tips

Even if you are great with the spot comparisons, learn more about essay’s structure and requirements before set to writing. A lot of college students among others therefore come across such essays which they are expected to write perfectly.

It is the essay in which the student reveals the similarities and differences between two or more things and reinforces his or her findings by arguments.

1. Develop an Argument for the Paper

Before you start a writing process, you brainstorm your topic and find some outstanding characteristics of two objects. Those things have to be contrasting enough to be compared. The title of your future essay may sound like “Apple vs. Microsoft” or “Differences and similarities in ancient Greek and ancient Egyptian myth”.

In practice, do not forget to write down the features you found meaningful on the paper. Every thought can be important, so note everything that comes to mind and move on to the next step.

2. Create the Compare and Contrast Essay Structure

It follows the standard template for all essays is a basic scheme Introduction – Main Body – Conclusion. In the introduction, you form a thesis of your essay and present the subject of a further discussion to your audience. This part must be compelling enough to motivate people to read the main body. Therefore, you need to create a hook at the beginning of your article. This can be:

  • Bold claim.
  • Interesting fact,
  • Joke or anecdote,
  • Personal experience,

3. Consider the Essentials of Compare and Contrast Essay Format

The main body of a compare and contrast essay can be organized into three methods including:

 Point by point method

The main purpose of this method is an evaluation criterion. For instance, you can assess Microsoft and Apple by innovations, cost of their software or the popularity of key products.

Topic by topic method

You start with describing one object and allocate its distinguishing points in the beginning. After that, you turn to the second thing and write down everything you know about it in the last paragraphs. This layout is considered to be smooth and understandable

 Common and different separately

Here you organize your essay in the format “start with the comparison, end with contrast.” The order may be reversed if you want to emphasize the common features instead of differences.

4. Outline the Paper

Once you create the outline, the paper will compose itself alone. There are various useful techniques – family tree, rough draft, schemes, and tables.  Outlines mean planning the structure, sketching the approximate variant of essay and organizing of main points in a particular order – the actions which make writing simpler.

5. Use Graphical Elements

Dilute the text with images, graphics, tables, diagrams and other elements. However, it is possible only if you type the assignment on your PC. On the lesson you should present the information in an interesting way without any pictures, so structure, hooks, and indisputable points are your best friends.
